What is happening in Malá Strana?

In Malá Strana, extensive modernisation of public infrastructure has been under way since April 2025. The main goal of the project is to build a new high-capacity optical network that will bring stable and extremely high-speed internet with up to 10 Gb/s to households, businesses, schools and institutions. The work is being spread out from 2025 to 2027 and coordinated by Prague 1 together with the Technical Administration of Roads and the operators Vodafone, Quantcom and CETIN.

The construction of the fibre-optic network is not limited to laying cables. The project includes the complete renovation of the pavements from façade to curb, including barrier-free modifications where they are approved by the heritage authorities. Residents will not only get modern connectivity but also a better and safer public space.

The project aims to improve connection reliability, eliminate outages and prepare Malá Strana for future digital services. The conditions for working from home, online learning, running local businesses and using modern technology will be significantly improved.

How will it be done?

Work always commences with the installation of traffic signage, which is installed on site no fewer than seven days in advance. On the commencement day, the complete signage is deployed in accordance with the approved traffic-engineering measure, and workers begin the professional removal of the mosaic paving. This is then securely stored, and the pavement remains open for pedestrians for the entirety of the work.

This is followed by the excavation of a trench along the curb and the excavation of connection lines to the buildings. These are always covered with walk-on plates to maintain a safe pedestrian route. The excavations are secured with barriers and are immediately backfilled and compacted after the fibre-optic cables are laid.

The area is subsequently taken over by DAP, which completes the concrete bedding, substrate preparation and the full-width installation of the new mosaic paving. Road surfaces are only opened where absolutely necessary, and generally finished the same day.

The sites are inspected, cleaned and secured daily to make traffic and pedestrian movement as safe as possible.

How PACMAN works

What is PACMAN?

It is a new pilot website from Prague 1 that aims to clearly show ongoing excavations, construction work and other public‑space disruptions. It is currently used (in pilot operation) to show the process of installing the optical network in Malá Strana. In the future, PACMAN will be used to show all linear construction projects taking place anywhere in Prague 1.

How does the map work?

Click on a specific action on the map to see its detail - you can find out details about the progress of the work. You can choose whether you want to see work that has been completed, is in progress or is still being planned. The timeline makes it easy to see what stage the work has reached on a specific street on the chosen date. In particular, the map can give you an overview of what's happening in your street.

What do the colours mean?

The colours on the map indicate the stage of the work. Yellow indicates planned work, red indicates work in progress, and green indicates work that has recently been completed. This lets you see at a glance what’s going on in each location - and what may be ahead.

Why was PACMAN created?

PACMAN was created so that users of the area could be informed in a timely manner about how linear constructions that affect movement or business in their surroundings will be carried out. It is specifically designed to convey information about the timeline of individual works. Prague 1 wants to make sure everyone has the information they need. We are currently piloting PACMAN on a fibre-optic network construction project in Malá Strana. We will use the knowledge gained from this to further improve PACMAN.
